2018 Conference Announcement

Dear Colleagues,

The preparation for the NER-AMTA 2018 conference has begun, and we hope that you are as excited as we are to be back in Westbrook, CT at the gorgeous Water’s Edge Resort and Spa.

Our conference is titled: Uniting in Diversity: Bringing Together the Individuals of the Music Therapy Community, and we look forward to a time of growth, rejuvenation, learning, and connecting with our friends and colleagues. We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal for a concurrent session, CMTE, or research poster at the regional conference.

We had many fantastic suggestions on session topics from last year’s conference evaluations, and they include: diversity, multicultural topics, neurologic music therapy, research, ethics, varied theoretical orientations, medical settings, school age populations, autism, collaborating with disciplines outside of the music therapy profession, trauma, community building, improvisation, and guitar skills. If you feel like you have expertise in these or any other subjects, please submit your proposal as we hope to have a varied and diverse program!

All proposals will be reviewed using a double-blind review model. Reviewers will base their considerations on content, clarity, and completeness of the abstract (50%), if the proposal fits within the scope of practice and professional competencies of AMTA and CBMT (25%), and how the proposal meets the needs of our region based upon the 2017 conference evaluations (25%).

You may find the links on our website at: http://www.musictherapynewengland.org/2018-conference/

The last day for submissions is SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 2018.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at vicepresident@musictherapynewengland.org or vicepresidentelect@musictherapynewengland.org

We look forward to seeing you April 19-21, 2018 as we focus on creating community and cohesion within ourselves and our profession.

Sincerely,

In memory of Sonja Granskou

Dear NER community,

Just want to share that our community has lost a bright, beautiful soul. My friend and music therapist, Sonja Granskou, passed away on August 4, 2017. I met Sonja a few years ago and was immediately inspired by her smile and positive, gentle way of being. Sonja was a radiant light who loved nature and loved to sing. One of her favorite songs was “Climb Every Mountain.” And boy, did she climb mountains! Sonja received her Master of Arts in Music Therapy and Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University in 2009 and a Master of Music in Performance Voice in the Graduate Opera Program at Boston University in 1996. She had a gorgeous voice and loved working as a clinician and music therapist. We liked singing together and talking about our wonderful music therapy community.

Sonja was from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. One of the biggest mountains that Sonja climbed in her life was her healing journey from ovarian cancer. Sonja did everything possible to heal, researching and using conventional and many alternative treatments (even going to Vienna, Austria). I admired her sense of humor, strong will to live, her diligence, her faith and most of all her ability to be vulnerable and at peace with whatever the outcome. Sonja’s light is very bright. I truly believe that her light is with all of us in this community and her spirit is flying free with the angels and God in heaven. God bless you Sonja. We love you!!

Please email or call me if you would like to mail a card and I will send the address. Sonja also has a Facebook page if anyone would like to post a message there as well.

Thank you,

Warmly,

Lauren Calista Angelone

· This is the first comprehensive textbook on multicultural dimensions of music therapy. The editors pass the literary microphone to the authors—all music therapists who have found belonging and identity in diverse cultures. The authors examine how music therapy is relevant within an individual’s cultural context through personal and scholarly explorations. The chapters are separated into three sections: 1) understanding oppression and bias; 2) minority cultures within North America; and 3) inclusive music therapy practice and education. This focused examination prompts the reader to listen to myriad minority voices and engage in cultural dialogues. Light refreshments will be served. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, or you may review and purchase the book at http://www.barcelonapublishers.com/multicultural-intersections-music-health-the-person

Conference Program and App Announcement

Hello NER!
There is a tingling of excitement in the air as we arrange the final touches on this year’s conference. This year we will have released our conference program via PDF. Our VP elect did a BEAUTIFUL job creating this for us. I recommend downloading this to your device in a program such as iBooks (for apple devices) or Adobe Acrobat PDF (for Android Devices).  If you require a print version, I suggest  downloading it on your device now and print it out.

Also, we have used Guidebook as our app host this year. Please download the app. A unique passcode will be presented to you at conference.

Need more guidance?  I created a handy video tutorial especially for you! So check it out for download instructions and a sneak peek of guidebook. If you need further assistance with android devices, try this link  or visit me at the registration desk and we can troubleshoot together. As always, if you require assistance with other technology related matters, you can contact me.

Looking forward to sea-ing you in Newport!

NERAMTA Bylaws and Constitution Merge

Hello NER-AMTA Members,
The Bylaws Committee has been tasked with the BIG job of merging our two current documents the NER-AMTA Constitutions and NER-AMTA Bylaws which governs our regional organization.
The merging of both documents is to streamline these documents into one; to follow AMTA’s model of their Bylaws, to avoid duplicity, and to make updates.
Please review the newly merged document entitled NER-AMTA Bylaws to understand the rationale behind each change. However in summary, the changes include:
-General language used, to be more inclusive and forward-thinking
-Delineate elected officers versus appointed officers and to clarify their roles
-Update and include additional positions to the current leadership that are not listed in NER’s current documents
The NERAMTA members will vote on this newly merged document, to replace our current two documents on Friday March 31st during the Business Luncheon at the Spring Conference in Newport, RI, to go into effect on March 31, 2017.  Please review before then and send any constructive comments/feedback to judynengel@gmail.com for considerations by 3/29/17.
