Job Description:

Eastman Performing Arts Medicine and the Music Therapy Program at UR Medicine are looking for a Research Coordinator for Music and Medicine to join our team. The successful candidate will be a Board-Certified Music Therapist with research experience. Equal effort will be shared between the Eastman School and UR Medicine. The Research Coordinator will: 

  1. Serve as a coordinator for music and medicine-based studies at the Eastman School of Music. Under general guidance and with latitude to exercise independent judgment provide support Eastman faculty in bringing their research protocols through the IRB process. Coordinate participant enrollment and schedules in music and medicine research studies. 
  2. Serve as a coordinator for music therapy-based studies at UR Medicine. Under general guidance and with latitude to exercise independent judgment develop music therapy-based studies, coordinate patient enrollment, schedules, and care in clinical research studies for the music therapy program. Plan, implement, coordinate, and, at times, administer the intervention for patients and their families enrolled in study protocols.   
  3. Maintain a working knowledge of clinical trial coordination by reviewing research literature, attending pertinent meetings and seminars, participate in the preparation of study documents and regulatory requirements.  Complete regulatory requirements and develop study protocols, assessments.   

 

The Research Coordinator will contribute to the advancement of research, theory, and practice in the fields of music therapy and music & medicine. They will play a vital role in educating caregivers, administrators, and the general public about the role of music in medical settings. 

Launched in 2019, the University of Rochester’s Eastman Performing Arts Medicine (EPAM) is a collaborative program linking the Eastman School of Music and UR Medicine. EPAM is composed of four pillars: 

Heal, to connect performing artists with specialists in performing arts medicine;  

Inspire, to integrate live performing arts in healthcare spaces; 

Care, to expand creative arts therapies widely in UR Medicine; 

Learn, to develop the potential of the arts in therapy and rehabilitation through research. 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Consultation, Proposal Support, and Music and Medicine Research Coordination: Eastman School of Music(45%)
  • Responsible for all aspects of research start-up, including recruitment materials, informed consent form review, regulatory/essential documentation preparation, and maintaining study subject records and submissions to Institutional Review Boards. 
  • Assist investigator with developing, writing and amending study protocols. 
  • Manages IRB regulatory documents for the duration of studies. 
  • Organizes documents for local audits. 
  • Ensures all required elements related to study conduct are completed as per protocol.  
  • Prepares patient study information, status reports, and updates as necessary. 
  • Prepares materials for publication. 
  • Presents findings to local, regional, and/or national audiences. 
  1. Coordinate music therapy clinical research projects:UR Medicine  (45%)
  • Responsible for all aspects of research start-up, including recruitment materials, informed consent form review, regulatory/essential documentation preparation, and maintaining study subject records and submissions to Institutional Review Boards. 
  • Assist investigator with developing, writing and amending study protocols. 
  • Manages IRB regulatory documents for the duration of studies. 
  • Organizes documents for local audits. 
  • Ensures all required elements related to study conduct are completed as per protocol.  
  • Prepares patient study information, status reports, and updates as necessary. 
  • Prepares materials for publication. 
  • Presents findings to local, regional, and/or national audiences. 
  • May provide research intervention for some studies.  
  1. Leadership(5%)
  • Participate in educational experiences for students and/or professionals through interviews and/or presentations.  
  • May supervise graduate or practicum students in research methodologies, as determined by the Senior Music Therapist. 
  1. Professional Development(5%)
  • Participate in continuing education regarding research, music & medicine, medical music therapy, and/or other related areas to maintain professional competency and meet continuing education requirements for board certification and licensure, as appropriate. 
  • Assist in program development and advocacy, including grant writing, collaboration with Department of Advancement/Development & Community Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from an accredited college or university. 
  • 2 years of research methods experience 
  • Strong knowledge of research design and methodology. 
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of URMC software, websites, and computer databases used for clinical trials. 
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products, and both Windows & Macintosh systems. 
  • Ability to evaluate interventions and demonstrate competencies by providing age-appropriate care to patients and their family.  
  • Strong knowledge of medical music therapy, including developmentally appropriate practices, patient assessment, and evaluation.  
  • Board certified by The Certification Board for Music Therapists (MT-BC) or obtained within 6 months of hire.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Music Therapy from an accredited college or university. 
  • 2 years of research coordination training and experience 
  • New York State licensure (LCAT) or limited permit eligible
