is Professor Emeritus of
Music and Former Director of the Music Therapy Program
at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. He holds the
designation of Fellow of the Association for Music and
Imagery; he is a Board Certified Music Therapist and is a
member of the American Music Therapy Association. Over
the years Jim has held contracts with Lewis Gale Hospital
Alcohol and Drug Program, Lewis Gale Clinics-Chronic
Pain Program, Life Center of Galax Treatment Center, The
Center for Behavioral and Rehabilitative Medicine, and
Avenues to Recovery Adult and Adolescent Programs. He
has provided Music Therapy trainings throughout the
United States as well as in Korea, Germany, Canada,
Spain, Japan and Mexico. He is widely published,
contributing both to professional journals and book
chapters on a variety of topics around the clinical
applications of music therapy. His primary clinical focus
currently includes special applications in the field of
addictions and men’s work.

2. Participants will describe the differences between physical, emotional and spiritual recovery within substance abuse disorder treatment (B.3.c, e, h;
I.B.12, C.2.)
3. Participants will describe how music therapy experiences can be integrated into levels of recovery (I.D.4.; I.D.10; IV.A.2)
4. Participants will demonstrate how drumming as a structure for intentional group work within recovery models (II.A.2.g.; o; q; u; v; ah, an, ao, aw,).
Music Therapy within Substance Abuse Recovery is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 8 Continuing Music Therapy Education credits.
